Proper wax preparation ensures a waxing experience that leaves you satisfied with optimal results. We recommend exfoliating the area that will be waxed for a few days leading up to your appointment. Clean, dry, exfoliated skin is the best skin for waxing. We also recommend avoiding sun exposure for at least 48 hours before and after your wax.
Hair needs to be at least ¼ inch long for effective waxing, and up to ½ inch long, or about the length of a grain of rice. This ensures that the wax can grab onto the hair and pull out the entire hair follicle. If hair is too short, the wax won’t have a secure hold. This can make waxing more painful, require repeated waxing of the same area, or risk that the hair follicle won’t be fully removed. If your hair is longer than half an inch, don’t worry. Put down the scissors and relax! Your Pynk Tech will take care of any trimming prior to waxing.
We strongly discourage shaving before waxing! It can irritate the skin and, of course, it will leave the hair too short to wax properly.
Are there products I should or shouldn’t use before a wax?
If you use products with retinol in them, we suggest that you stop using them at least one week before your wax.
Also, consider certain medications such as Retin A, Renova, or Accutane can increase the rate at which your skin exfoliates, meaning you could risk removing skin during a wax.
Last but not least, we recommend avoiding heavy lotions, oils or creams the day of your wax. These can make skin greasy, therefore making the wax less effective.
Post Wax Care
After your service we apply our healing balm with is anti bacterial and soothing for the skin to prevent ingrown and irritation. We highly recommend purchasing some for home care to ensure your skin remains moisturized and ingrown free between waxes.
You will want to stay out of the water. Newly waxed skin is vulnerable to infection, which is why you’ll want to give yourself a bit of time to heal before getting into the water. Sources of standing water in particular, such as pools, are a concern and should be avoided for 24-48 hours after a wax. Showers are fine after the procedure just make sure the water isn't too hot.
It may be tempting to check out your newly smooth skin. However, you’ll want to wait at least a day before running your fingers down there. This is because your fingers are likely to introduce bacteria to the newly sensitized region. Give yourself about 2 days, or 24-48 hours, to recover from the wax before engaging in any sexual activity.
The newly waxed area is more sensitive and more susceptible to invading bacteria, it’s best to avoid heat, sweat, and friction after your wax. For at least 24 hours, you’ll want to avoid saunas, tanning beds, and even the gym.
Avoid tight and constricting clothing for a few days after your wax. This helps the area heal faster and avoids friction, which can cause sweat and bacteria buildup. Two days after your wax, use a good quality exfoliant to help avoid ingrown hairs. You can make your own exfoliant or ask your Pynk Tech to make a product recommendation. Remember, that exfoliating too soon can cause additional irritation to your skin, so you should definitely wait for the 48-hour mark, or even longer if your skin is particularly sensitive.
